Home of the Baby Hornets!

Oklahoma’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver is designed to ensure each student who graduates from an Oklahoma high school is college, career, and citizen ready. This waiver provides Oklahoma with the flexibility it needs to press forward with implementation of reforms, while giving schools room to grow.

One requirement of this Flexibility Waiver is parent notification of school improvement status.  Our school’s designation letter is below for your convenience.

The Baby Hornet Pom at the MLK Parade making Walt Whitman Elementary Proud!

It's Science Explorer Week at Walt Whitman! Students tested different materials to determine which were magnetic and which were non-magnetic. We experimented with magnetic field and made a beautiful piece of art using magnets!

"The 2015-2016 Walt Whitman Elementary Choir was honored to perform at the Tulsa Public Schools board meeting on Monday, January 4. The concert was well received by the board and all in attendance. What a great way to kick off 2016!"

- Maria Reed, Choir Director

The Walt Whitman Choir was invited to perform at the Gilcrease Museum to celebrate holiday season. They did a wonderful job bringing to cheer to museum patrons! We are so proud of how these students represented our school to the community!

Fall Harvest Festival Night was a big success! Students and their families had the opportunity to enjoy some fresh herbs and vegetables from the school garden. The schools Garden Club helped to make this possible by working hard after school to maintain the garden and then harvesting the herbs and vegetables for families. After students and families learned some wonderful new facts about the garden, they moved down to the classrooms to engage in literacy games. The literacy games helped students to build their skills in a fun, engaging way while also earning a prize!

For more information on the garden, check out The Teaching Garden page!

The Kindergarten team finished off the first quarter with a goal party for the students who had met their First Quarter Goals. The First Quarter Goal for Kindergarten was to know all uppercase letter names and all lower case letter names. We are so proud of all the baby hornets who worked hard to accomplish their goals. Way to go Kindergarten!

Walt Whitman Blast gave students the opportunity to celebrate the end of the school year and relax after working so hard on all of their end of year tests. Students were able to bounce through an inflatable obstacle course, check out the local station's firetruck, or escape from the heat with an ice cream break! Thank you to all of community partners for making this possible and shout out to Ms. S Johnson for planning the wonderful event!

Fox23's Meteorologist Ben Walnick came and spoke to the 3rd grade to help them learn about severe weather conditions. He showed the students the different types of radars and satellite dishes around the Tulsa area that help spread the news and learn about the weather. The students had been working hard in groups on research projects about different types of severe weather - blizzards, tornados, tsunamis, and earthquakes. They enjoyed meeting a Meteorologist and having a great new resource for their projects before presenting them to their classmates!
